Learning Spaces: 21st Century Learning Classrooms

With the year 2018 slowing approaching, students working in single rows and seated in a desk should start to become obsolete and schools should start to incorporate better learning spaces for their students.

Classrooms need to be better learning spaces to accommodate for the variety of learners. For example, for the hands on learners who learn better with movement the classroom needs to be big enough to allow that movement to occur. Or for the visual learner there needs to be plenty of writing space for students to see their work.

In order to provide such learning spaces educators need to take these things into consideration:

  • Learning spaces should be comfortable
  • Lighting affects your mood
  • Allow different seating patterns
  • Have playful spaces
  • Technology accessibility

Example of play spaces

Having a good learning space encourages better learning. By allowing students to move furniture, sit wherever during reading and move around creates a welcoming environment. By having this type of environment for your students allows them to:
  • Have chances to recharge their body
  • Create independence
  • Invest in their learning
All of this is capable because they are not held down by the structure of being forced to sit still and be quiet.

A good example of learning spaces on campus would be the newer buildings on campus such as Zook or the Law building. Along with the Student Union and library. What makes them good spaces is because they each approach the informal learning spaces by having:
  • Desks/furniture that support collaboration
    • This means that the furniture is moveable to suit the needs of any class that steps into the room
  • There are plenty of outlets in the room (both in the walls and floors)
    • Since technology is a big part of classrooms, it is good to have enough outlets to support the many students who bring their laptops to class
  • Smart lectern
  • Easy control lightning
    • Like I stated earlier light affects your mood so being able to control the lighting is a great development to have in a classroom
When developing new learning spaces in schools Google Apps are good things to incorporate in a classroom as well. By using apps such as Google forms students are able to get immediate feedback instead of waiting to get a paper handed back to them. Google Apps keeps up with the high paced learning that new learning spaces hold.

Although the only building I have classes in is Zook I think that overall it aligns with the needs of its learners. The classroom that I am in has furniture that is easily moveable, a white board, SmartBoard and projector/screen. It also has ample amount of space to move the furniture in any arrangement depending on the class. And the teacher also has control of the lighting and operation of the blinds. The one thing that I would change would be the chairs, they are very uncomfortable. I like that they are wheels but I wish they were adjustable and had arms on them.

When creating learning spaces you need to make sure all of your students are comfortable. When you are comfortable, you are going to be more relaxed and better learning will take place. Remember, if you are uncomfortable in a classroom than most likely your students are too.

Cool Tool #2- Emaze

The Cool Tool that I chose to review for this week is Emaze . Emaze is the next generation of PowerPoint presentation that expands to offer a creation tool to the social hubs such as website design , blogs, ecards, and photo albums. With Emaze you are able to add media, GIFs, and live social feeds. Some features that Emaze has is that it is easy to share content anywhere and monitor who is watching. It is also easy to use , has front-line designs and be used on more than one device. Along with that Emaze has language support and is cloud based so you are able to save on your cloud. You can also upload an existing PowerPoint and make changes from there OR you can create your own from scratch. Something else that is nice is that students can use their Google account information to create an Emaze, which means that they will not have to memorize new information.  Emaze could be used in the classroom for presentation purposes both for teachers and students. For teachers this co...

Ebooks

I don't have a catchy title for this week's blog...sorry. BUT if you did read my bland title today's blog theme is all about Ebooks! Ebooks are just electronical versions on of printed books that can be read on the computer or any other electronic device. Ebooks in the classroom should be used in younger grades, intervention classes, or as an option for students who do not read as well or as quick as their peers.  According the the article E-Books and TPACK:   What Teachers Need to Know About Ebooks ,  Ebooks have the traditional conventions of print books such as having a title, pages and chapters but they also have pictures and hotspots that provide navigation mechanisms for the reader such as: animations, sounds, videos, and read aloud functions. Perfect for students who struggle with reading. I think that these would be great to assign to students who also struggle with bring things back or loosing items that they are given. In the school that I am tutoring...

Blog #11- Productivity

Productivity as an educator is one of the most important things you need to be. Personally, I would like to get a routine going in the start of my teaching career to make things easier in the future than to continue to work hard my whole teaching career. When achieving productivity in the classroom you want to make sure that your students interests are kept while also incorporating high order thinking. After taking this class there are a few productivity tools that I could see myself using in my classroom such as: Reminding Tools - to help me remind myself of test days or important dates and to also help me remind my students and their parents of the homework that is due along with important dates (tests, field trips, permission slip deadlines, picture day, ect). With these tools it also holds the students accountable because they cannot use the excuse of "I did not know what the homework was so I did not do it". This gives multiple ways to communicate these important ...
