Kickin it with T: Adventures with Technology

The video that I decided to use was taught me how to do faux calligraphy; and I must say that this is something I think I can catch on quicker than modern calligraphy. Although it takes more time than modern calligraphy I like that I do not have to focus on how hard or light I pressing my marker when I writing. The only downfall I have with this is that it that it takes longer to get it to look just right. This video along with another one that I watch were both very helpful and again very easy to follow. Although it is still the best (I still have more practice that is needed) I think that faux calligraphy is the way for me.  Overall, I enjoyed learning this skill and think that I will still continue practicing and teaching myself so I can improve get better. This will be a great skill to have once I am able to get the hang of it.

After watching my first video on calligraphy and lettering tips and learning that I could have used crayola markers all along instead of going out and buying calligraphy pens I decided to try those. So I found this video on how "easy" they are to use. This are the markers that I chose to switch over to instead of the pens I got I got my hopes up again to find out that although the video itself was very helpful and easy to follow, I still don't have the calligraphy hand. While some people have a led foot when driving, pressing hand on the gas, I have a led hard and cannot find any grace to my handwriting. I have gotten good at writing in cursive BUT I struggle trying to get my hand to have thin lines going up and thick lines going down. Although I am not proud of what I have attempted from watching the video this is the result that I got. Although I accept this challenge with open arms, calligraphy is a lot harder than I thought it was going to be!

So for my last three blogs I decided to use YouTube videos for help and advice because I still am unsure of what I am doing. What I liked about this one was that she went over tips that worked for her such as: You can use Crayola markers! No textured paper  Practice doing wavy lines to help with your up and down strokes I also learned what the four different lines on practice paper are for  After doing this I am realizing how HARD it is to do modern calligraphy, my hands are not used to having to switch back and forth between writing soft on upstrokes and hard on the down strokes. I never noticed that I wrote so hard until I started teaching myself this skill. Once I completed this video I also noticed that the supplies I decided to use were probably not the best and required me to do more work than I really needed to do. Hello! I hope you all had a stress free weekend. On this week's blog I wrapped up writing the alphabet with my last two printouts. These letters were by far the easiest ones to complete and I found that practice style number nine is my favorite. I'm not sure if it is because of the practice and repetition but these ones were much easier for me to recreate. They were simple and did not require a bunch of intricate accents like the previous ones. Overall, I am still enjoying this task and have not found anything too difficult about it. The only problem I have run across is when I should use a thick marker verses a thin marker. I think that the thick marker is easier to use, but when it comes to doing the details the thinner maker is better. But the problem with the thinner maker is you can see all of your mistakes if you happen to mess up, it is not as easy to cover up. My next blog will be using videos to help me with my technique. Day three and still going strong. I was in the zone this day and just kept going and did four of the printouts instead of just three. I find that this activity is good to do when you are stressed and just need to take time for yourself (something that I have realized I need to do more often). I am glad that this is the skill that I picked because it is an activity that I can do on my own and don't really need anyone else. When I do these I tend to take 2-3 hours to complete (all four not just for one) because I am just so focused on every detail and creating mine just like the printout shows. Although I am very focused and determined to be good at this, this is also the time where I am able to unwind and think. After this day of calligraphy I thought about the following: What makes me happy? Hi! I know that it has been a while since I have blogged about my progress but I have been practicing my cursive skills with the printouts that I found online and have been journaling along the way. I have just not been keeping up with reporting my progress. But from now on I will keep you informed on how my calligraphy journey is going. With that, I present to you Kickin' It with T: Calligraphy Day 2. In the photo above I have compiled a collage of my calligraphy progress. The photos on the top are the printouts and the ones on the bottom are my attempts to recreate them. For my second and third attempts I do not think they are too bad BUT it they did require more concentration than I expected. Overall, for the first three that I tried have been successes. By far the second and third pictures were way more intricate and detailed than the first. I think that this is because I used the thin tipped marker on those rather than the bigger one. For my Major Digital Project I decided to teach myself how to do calligraphy. Calligraphy is decorative handwriting or handwritten lettering. I love, love, LOVE watching calligraphy videos , I think that they are so calming because everything is so smooth and neat. Watching this progress of the words transform is so amazing and I want to be able to produce something just as crisp and clean as the videos that I see. I chose to do calligraphy because I think that it is very pretty and elegant. It is a skill that not very many people can do, is inexpensive, and something that I can learn to do in the comfort of my own home.
